Gerrit founded Northcliff Orthopaedic Centre (G Ferreira Inc.). His passion for orthotics and prosthetics is rooted in a profound personal experience. At the age of 15, he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, which left him paralysed from the neck down. Bedridden for nine months, he eventually regained partial function but was left with bilateral complete paralysis of his feet. It was during his own rehabilitation, while having orthoses manufactured to help him walk again, that Gerrit discovered his life’s calling.

This personal journey gives him a unique, empathetic understanding of the physically disabled patient. He recognises that using an assistive device is a complex transition and that managing physical pressures is key to a successful fit. Beyond his clinical work, Gerrit is an avid golfer, a passion he pursued just four years after his paralysis and has never stopped since. Currently playing twice a week, he is a long-standing member of the South African Disabled Golf Union and has competed in several SA Open Championships over the years, winning a few B Division Club Championships and competing in several interprovincial competitions, embodying the very mobility and active lifestyle he helps his patients achieve.

He began his professional journey at Klerksdorp Hospital in 1981. He obtained his National Certificate in Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics in 1983 and his National Diploma in 1985, qualifying as a Medical Orthotist and Prosthetist. Gerrit served with distinction at Klerksdorp Hospital for nearly two decades, eventually retiring as the Chief Medical Orthotist and Prosthetist for the North West Province in 1998. He founded Northcliff Orthopaedic Centre the same year and has worked in the field since 1981, specialising in:

• Prosthetics: Comprehensive management of both upper and lower limb prosthetic solutions, including high-tech microprocessor knees (MPKs) and myoelectric hands and elbows.
• Orthoses for Neuro-orthopaedic Patients: Expert prescription of advanced neurological bracing systems (AFOs, KAFOs and spinal bracing).
• Custom Foot Orthotics: Specialised solutions for diabetic patients, geriatrics, athletes and general structural foot problems.
• Paediatric Orthotic Foot Care: Addressing congenital and developmental foot problems in children.
• Sports Injury Bracing: Providing stability and support for peak athletic recovery.
• Medical Compression Stocking Therapy: Specialised treatment for vascular conditions, including varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency and post-DVT recovery.
• Lymphoedema and Lipoedema Management: Expert custom design of compression garments for complex lymphatic conditions and bariatric patients.
• Home Nursing Expertise: Wide knowledge of nursing aids and equipment for home environments.
